A Road trip can be daunting. You are going to be sitting in a car for x amount of time and you know you’re going to want to get there as soon as possible. You also know you’re gonna get bored at staring at the same scenery over and over. And both of those things equals eating in the car. I love food alot and i can not go on a road trip without snacks. A wide variety of snacks too. I’m going to be talking about some healthier snack options that are gonna keep you content and snack happy.
Before mentioning some snacks I want to say, YOU CAN BRING ANY FOOD YOU WANT. You want oreo’s for the ride, bring the oreos. You want cookies? Bring the cookies. I honestly am bringing Goldfish and Chips Ahoy’s with me along with the snacks mentioned below because I can eat the whole bag of them and they’re good. I personally bring snacks that lean on the healthier side to keep me full and won’t make my stomach hurt while I have to sit and drive for hours on end.
Healthy is also a relative term. I feel that healthy should be defined as something that offers nutritional value in some way but also something that works best for you. I find dairy hurts my stomach so I tend to avoid those items. Although we can define dairy as healthy in a nutritional value sense as it offers carbs and protein…. I wouldn’t say it is healthy for me. It makes me feel sick after all so that would not work. This post is ideas that you might to bring outside the traditional bag of chips.
With that said…. here are my favorite road trip snacks:
PRETZELS:
A classic. A staple. Pretzels are an awesome snack because you can eat them in abundance and still not get an upset stomach. They also don’t melt in the heat and aren’t messy. HUGE deal when you’re gonna be stuck in a car for a while. I’ve had chocolate melt on these kind of road trips and it just aint fun to deal with. So pretzels are a great salty option.
Protein Bars:
These are life savers. Nothing says “I’m bored so I’m gonna feel hungry” like a road trip. I love protein bars because about 2 to 3 hours into the ride when i clearly know I’m not hungry but feel it, I eat one of these. They help me feel full while I drive further. Can’t be stopping food ever 2 hours. That truly would be the trip of “are we there yet?” Do not pick any old protein bar for these trips. Find a protein bar that has at least 7-8 g of protein. My favorites are by THINK and Clif. Definitely keep me full for a very long time and every one I have tried taste amazing. You can also bring some that are more sweet and some that are more salty so you can satisfy either craving you have at the time.

POPCORN:
I also love popcorn a lot. Some lightly salted popcorn is a great roadside snack. I don’t bring popcorn that is super buttery (the good kind that you pop in the microwave) simply because I don’t want butter getting all over everything in the car. I always have napkins with me on these road trips but those don’t do enough when up against butter. So the salted kind from a bag is perfect.
PROTEIN SHAKES:
These one’s are a little more difficult because they have to be cold. If you’re bringing a cooler, I highly recommend them then. I always bring a cooler though so I can bring a variety of drinks. These are great, just like protein bars, they taste good and keep me full for so long. I like Premier Proteins as they taste super yummy, like chocolate milk if you get the second one, but have 30 g of protein. These do tend to upset my stomach if I drink them quick(because of the dairy), so if you’re like me be aware of that. I usually drink half at a time and feel fine.

BANANA:
If you dont like bananas, this one is obviously not for you. I love bananas for 2 main reasons, They aren’t messy and give me energy. Along with feeling hungry, nothing makes you more tired than driving. Especially when it’s the same scenery over and over. The peel is also biodegradable so if you don’t have a trash bag with you and you MUST get rid of it for some reason, you can throw it out the window MarioKart style.

TRAIL MIX:
I love trail mix a ton. This is another snack of mine that I have to restrict myself to serving sizes. If I didn’t, I could easily eat half the giant size bag of trail mix from Costco. This is an awesome snack to bring on road trips because it hits salty and sweet and is mess free. Clearly a theme we have going on. It also will keep you full since its protein and fats. And there’s chocolate involved. Trail Mix just does no wrong.
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
-dried fruit
-grapes
Of course as I mentioned earlier, bring whatever snacks you want. I enjoy Goldfish, Chips ahoy, mini oreos, and chips the most out of my “non healthy” (really hate referring to them as that) snacks. I simply choose the options above since they will push off my hunger and are mess free all while being tasty. I hope if you’re headed on a road trip anytime soon, these snacks gave you some ideas on what to bring.
Happy road tripping!
Em
